This time, we decided we wanted to be more active and get involved in some outdoor activities given the natural beauty of Oman and the added bonus of maybe dropping a bit of weight. We just needed to pick an activity. For a couple of reasons, we chose not one but three...knowing what we knew about shopping we decided to stock up on the stuff we'd need right here in Houston.
The 1st sport, Biking: We learned that a group of Oman ex-pats have formed a cycling club where they do 30-50 mile bike rides. They also have a more casual group that takes kids along. After getting the scoop from a co-worker of Erin's we decided to take the plunge. So we each got a Specialized Rubaix Triple 09 road bike and helmets, bike shorts/jerseys, waterpacks, etc. yesterday. We're going to get a trailer as well for pulling along the little ones.
The 2nd sport, Kayaking: Kayaking in the pacific off Pismo Beach was a groomsman activity at our wedding and was an absolute blast. Erin's dad Larry and mom Corrine even decided to take up the sport after that and have kayaked in Baltimore and other points east. We'd heard about several ex-pats who've taken it up in Oman and enjoyed it. The seas are supposedly pretty calm as well and the initial investment isn't too bad. We joined REI and got an inflatable tandem kayak from Advanced Elements that can be inflated in 10 minutes and is portable. After that you just need a couple of oars and PFD's and you're good to go!
The 3rd sport, Scuba Diving: We're already licensed back in 2004 through PADI so we just need to refresh our skills. If you've been inactive for a year or more it's easy to forget what you absolutely need to know for safety. We already have most of the gear and Oman is supposedly a destination country for Scuba. We really haven't used our certifications so I'm quite excited to get out there again.

So that's it, it's hard to believe we are leaving in 11 days. Looking forward to getting outside and participating in some X-games of our own!
