Potty Training Boot Camp

Erin and I spent the weekend hunkered down at home. We declared a potty training boot camp weekend, a special time when we got to follow a half naked toddler around the house, asking her 100 times if she had to go potty. Unless we got a definitive NO, she got picked up a jogged to the singing royal toilet. Yes, I just said "singing royal toilet". It's plastic and toddler sized, with a sensor at the bottom which plays electronic trumpet music when it comes in contact with anything wet. We even had a special offer going: a pee got her one M&M, the "other" got her two whole M&M's.

Prior to this weekend, we had little or no success hearing royal trumpet music. With a diaper on, Wynne has no incentive whatsoever to use the potty. I mean, what could be more convenient than just going right in your pants? But this weekend, we turned a corner. After a few accidents on Friday, we started to get the timing down and set a clock while we pumped her full of watered down juice and milk. Soon enough, we had her predictably going every 15 minutes. Her face was priceless the first time she went and the trumpet music started; it was the same reaction as if we had jumped out and scared the crap out her (which, by the way, she loves). We all went nuts and clapped and yelled "potty!!!!!". After that she got her M&M and then we cleaned the potty while Wynne went with us to say "bye-bye" as we flushed it.

What happened over the last two days was that Wynne started to learn the sensation that precedes going potty. We had more success on Saturday, and on Sunday she started wearing cotton panties. After a couple of panty accidents, we discovered that if she's not otherwise distracted she got better and better at identifying the need to go. Her M&M consumption went through the roof, but only one at a time if you catch my meaning. Near the end of Sunday, she walked over to her royal potty, sat down and went potty without any provocation or even interaction from us. We were beaming with parental pride.

Unfortunately we have two more hurdles; how to wean her off her expensive M&M habit, and how to leave the house... lol...

This week we are trying to see how often she goes when we aren't plying her with juice and milk all day. So there's much more work to do but it was a productive weekend of royal trumpeting music and M&M's!

Love it! Sometimes do you just sit back and laugh, laugh, laugh that your life so often revolves around "potty!" Sounds like it's going well. I might have to remember the M&M trick.

Great story. The real sucess comes when they can wipe their own bottom after number two. Our oldest, is four years old and can master that task.
